On the first attempt to make his love a Princess

I sought to win you a garland of roses,
Kiriana, my love.
I fought to win roses so white and so fair,
Roses to wear on your dark silken hair,
While the fiddler played and played on.

I fought for you wearing three swords on my arm,
Kiriana, my love.
But ermine swords aren’t enough for a bear,
He bit me and drove me away from his lair,
While the fiddler played and played on.

You fought and you won for me ivy of silver,
Leon, Leon, my love.
You won for me ivy of silversmith art,
Ivy for me to wear close to my heart,
While the fiddler played and played on.

Fight for me wearing three swords on your arm,
Leon, Leon, my love.
All the bears in the kingdom can’t keep us apart,
Not with ivy of silver to wear on my heart.
Let the fiddler play and play on.
